Solidarity / Αλληλεγγύη

A video installation and a booklet, in the form of a single unified internet project. Citizens and members of various communities from Greece and Germany talk about the many different faces of “Solidarity”, a notion which seems more imperative than ever in our time. The project, presented at the Ruhrtriennale Festival in Germany in 2019, has been reconstructed in order to reach an even wider audience via the internet.

In a Europe that faces the return of borders and the fear of the Other, solidarity is not just a viable alternative, but a necessity. In order to create an on-going video archive with multi-lingual messages, the artist Barbara Ehnes and her team asked active citizens and participants in various initiatives, in Greece and Germany, to talk about their unique concept of solidarity.

The video archive was initially presented as an installation in various locations around the city of Bochum, at the Festival Ruhrtriennale 2019 , in Germany. A booklet containing a selection of different quotes and notions of solidarity accompanied the work, while a rebetiko – based concert took place, bringing up the topic of Greek refugee music in the past and present.

The video archive was re-edited for Allothroe Europe, to address a wider audience. Going back to the roots, where it all started, in Greece, the team came in contact again with the participants, translated their sayings, and worked on a presentation of the project in the digital spatial. The online free distribution of the videos and the booklet, in times of self and social isolation, wishes to raise solidarity in the co-existence of the people of future Europe.
